CNN.com has launched a paywall, marking a major change in strategy for the news organization, part of a longer-term effort to make the digital business profitable. For $3.99 per month ($29.99 per year), subscribers will have access to CNN.com articles and will get benefits like exclusive election features, original documentaries, and fewer digital ads. The CNN homepage, live blogs and breaking news live stories, vertical videos, standalone video pages and interactive content will not be included in the paywall initially.
The “Baby Reindeer” defamation lawsuit against Netflix will move forward, ruled a judge on Friday. US District Judge R. Gary Klausner found that Netflix could have defamed Fiona Harvey, the inspiration behind the character in the show depicted as a twice-convicted stalker sentenced to five years in prison for sexual assault, by stating that the series was “based on a true story.” Harvey, who is seeking at least $170 million and says she has never been convicted of a crime, has “a probability of prevailing” in her case, the judge found. Claims for negligence, right of publicity and punitive damages were dismissed.
Oscar winner Hilary Swank (“Million Dollar Baby”) has joined the season three cast of Paramount+ With Showtime drama “Yellowjackets” as a recurring guest star.
Hulu ordered a 20-episode season two of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.” The eight-episode season one premiere, which dropped September 6, was the most-watched unscripted show on Hulu this year. “There was a philosophical question raised in season one which was ‘Can #MomTok survive this?’ The answer unequivocally is yes! Spring 2025 get your dirty sodas ready!”, said Rob Mills, EVP, Unscripted and Alternative Entertainment, Walt Disney Television.
Two-part documentary “I’m Not a Monster: The Lois Riess Murders” debuts Tuesday, October 15 at 9p, followed by episode two on Wednesday, October 16 at 9p. The true crime tale follows a killer grandma who goes on the run.
“It’s Florida Man” launches Friday, October 18 at 11p on HBO. The trailer for the quirky comedy promises mermaids, witches, corrupt police officers and celebrity guest stars.
Animated comedy “American Dad!” returns to TBS on Monday, October 28 at 10p. Voice cast guest stars this season include Kevin Bacon, Charles Barkley, Bret “The Hitman” Hart, Gabriel Iglesias, Michael Imperioli, Leslie Jones, Neal McDonough, Joel McHale and Kyra Sedgwick.
“One Hundred Years of Solitude,” a Netflix series adaptation of the novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, debuts Wednesday, December 11. The drama was filmed in Colombia with the support of Marquez’s family.
HBO stand-up comedy special “Seth Meyers: Dad Man Walking” debuts Saturday, October 2 at 10p. In his first HBO special, Meyers offers reflections on family, generational legacies, and why his kids provide the best material for his comedy.
“Jeff Dunham’s Scrooged-Up Holiday Special” drops Tuesday, November 19 on Prime Video. Dunham’s last stand-up special aired earlier this year on Comedy Central.
Max Original comedy “The Sex Lives of College Girls” returns for its third season on November 21, followed by one new episode weekly at 9p through January 23. The ten-episode series is created by Emmy-nominated writer and producer Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, and follows a group of college students at New England’s prestigious Essex College.
Later this month, Apple TV+ will be available via Prime Video in the US as an add-on subscription for $9.99 per month. Prime members will be able to subscribe to Apple TV+ with no extra apps to download, and no cable required. The subscription can be canceled at any time.
Kamala Harris accepted CNN’s invitation for a town hall on October 23, after a CNN presidential debate with Donald Trump was nixed by the Republican presidential candidate. Trump was also invited to do a town hall on CNN, but had yet to RSVP at press time.
Netflix has renewed Erin Foster’s chart-topping “Nobody Wants This” for a second season. Jenni Konner and Eric Kaplan (“Girls”) have joined as executive producers and showrunners for the romantic comedy starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. Erin Foster will remain as an EP alongside President of Jenni Konner Productions Nora Silver, Bell and Steve Levitan.
