Affiliate ABZs: Getting Tight on Tracking
Your affiliate marketing program is only as good as your partnerships. And your partnerships are only as good as they perform. To get the most out of them, you need to track performance.
Here are my quick and dirty tips for getting tight on performance tracking.
Set up automatics. Some of your tracking can and should be automatically monitored. These might include conversions, purchases, promo codes, downloads or installs. Basically, anything that can be automatically captured by a website, app or another backend system once the affiliate sends someone to the brand. Our first line of attack has historically been cookies, but…
Look beyond cookies. I don’t want to get too technical here, but while cookies are still a piece of operations at the moment, it’s not going to be that way forever. Make plans for other first-party data and other ways of tracking. (Keep reading.)
Decide what to track before you start. Are you working with brand ambassadors? Maybe a specific promo code for use at checkout will simplify your tracking. Is your affiliate effort part of a broader print and TV campaign? Consider a unique URL with custom landing pages. The point is: Connect your tracking to your partnership in a way that makes sense.
